What Is Scoliosis?

Everyone's spine has natural curves. These curves round our shoulders and make our lower back curve slightly in

Scoliosis is a musculoskeletal disorder in which there is a sideways curvature of the spine, or backbone. The bones that make up the spine are called vertebrae.

Who Gets Scoliosis?

  • Children Of every 1,000 children, 3 to 5 develop spinal curves that are considered large enough to need treatment.

  • Scoliosis in skeletally immature individuals is classified by age: infantile (0 to 3 years); juvenile (3 to 10 years); and adolescent (over 11 years, or from onset of puberty until skeletal maturity).

  • Girls are more likely than boys to have this type of scoliosis.

  • Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (scoliosis of unknown cause) is the most common type and occurs after the age of 10.

  • Idiopathic scoliosis can also occur in children younger than10 years of age, but is very rare.

  • Adults - Scoliosis usually develops during childhood, but it also can occur in adults. Adult scoliosis may represent the progression of a condition that actually began in childhood, and was not diagnosed or treated while the person was still growing. What might have started out as a slight or moderate curve has progressed in the absence of treatment.
