- The doctor checks if the patient’s shoulders are level, whether the    head is centred.

- The doctor also examines the back muscles while the patient is    bending forward to see if one side of the rib cage is higher than the    other.

- Technique: Forward Bending Test (most accurate)

o Patient position:

  • Patient with shirt off and spine fully visible.

  • Forward bending with feet together and knees straight.

  • Allow arms to hang down freely (or palms opposed).

  • o Examiner position:

  • Observe patient from behind.

  • o Abnormal findings: Unilateral changes:

  • Rib cage elevation on one side.

  • Prominent unilateral lumbar paravertebral      muscle.

  • o Technique: Adam's Test (Used for School screening):

  • Patient positioned as in forward bending above.

  • Examiner position:

  • Examiner sits at head of patient.

  • Abnormal findin:

  • Same as for forward bending exam above.

  • X-ray evaluation:

  • Standing radiographs of the entire spine remain the standard for diagnosis and treatment.
