Curve
Measurement:
Curves that are greater than 20 degrees require
treatment.
They use this information to decide how best to
treat the scoliosis.
In doing so, rib and flank prominence

caused by the scoliotic rotational deformity is more
visible and can be measured with an inclinometer
(Scoliometer™). |
Shape: |
| The curve usually is S or C-shaped. |
Pattern: |
The larger the curve is, the more likely it will progress (depending on the amount of growth remaining).

Simple tips for parental diagnosis: |
Idiopathic scoliosis can go unnoticed in a child because it
is rarely painful in the formative years. Therefore, parents
should watch for the following "tip-offs" to scoliosis
beginning when their child is about 8 years of age:
uneven shoulders
one side prominent shoulder blade
uneven waist
uneven hips
leaning to one side
Any one of these signs warrants an examination by the family
physician, paediatrician or orthopaedist. |
