What Are the Treatments? |
There are two options for management of Scoliosis: bracing, and
surgical correction. Most cases of scoliosis are detected when the
curvature is mild or moderate, and are treated successfully with
non-operative management alone. |
Observation: |
For curves between 10° and 29° and in the absence of progression, observation alone is recommended. |
Doctors follow patients without treatment and re-examine them every 4 to 6 months when the patient is still growing (is skeletally immature) and has an idiopathic curve of less than 25 degrees. |
Bracing: |
Doctors advise patients to wear a brace to stop a curve from getting any worse when the patient: |
is still growing and has an idiopathic curve that is
more than 25 to 30 degrees.
has at least 2 years of growth remaining, has an
idiopathic curve that is between 20 and 29 degrees, and,
if a girl, has not had her first menstrual period.

Bracing is recommended for skeletally immature individuals with
curves between 30° and 40°. |
Some adolescents find wearing the brace 16 to 23 hours every day
difficult. Braces can be uncomfortable, unattractive, hot, and can
make a child self-conscious even though well disguised under
clothing. |
