CHOOSING NOT TO TREAT SCOLIOSIS

It is important to seek treatment for Scoliosis because progressive scoliosis, left untreated, can result in significant deformity. The deformity can cause marked physical disability and psychological distress, especially among adolescent patients. Additionally, the deformity can have serious physical consequences.

If allowed to progress, in severe cases adult scoliosis can lead to chronic severe back pain, deformity, and difficulty in breathing.

As the vertebrae (spinal bones) rotate, the rib cage is affected, which in turn can cause heart and lung compromise (i.e. shortness of breath). When progressive scoliosis affects the lumbar spine the pain can be debilitating.

The majority of children who are identified as having scoliosis may not need complex treatments, but they do need to be evaluated. Most often, we can assure parents that either we need to observe their child in four to six months or, that their risk is so low that they really don't need to come back.

Long-term studies show that scoliotic curves in excess of 50° at skeletal maturity continue to progress throughout the patient’s adult life at a rate of approximately 1° per year.

RELATION BETWEEN PHYSICAL EXERCISES AND

SCOLIOSIS

Although exercise programs have not been shown to affect the natural history of scoliosis, exercise is encouraged in patients with scoliosis to minimize any potential decrease in functional ability over time. It is very important for all people, including those with scoliosis, to exercise and remain physically fit. Girls have a higher risk than boys of developing osteoporosis (a disorder that results in weak bones that can break easily) later in life. The risk of osteoporosis is reduced in women who exercise regularly all their lives; and weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, running, soccer, and gymnastics, increases bone density and helps prevent.
